Flamingo Doorstop

Flamingo Doorstop

Hello all you flamazing craft enthusiasts out there! This flamingo doorstop is another gift for a family member who happens to be absolutley bonkers for everything flamingo. We had made a feline version last year and had the bright idea to do another one only flamingo!

Step 1: Gather your supplies:

  • Pink and black fabric ( or whatever color your using) we used such a small amount of fabric.
  • Felt for accents ( beak, feet, wings, eyes, etc.)
  • Needle and thread in coordinating colors to your fabric. We also used a little embroidery thread for the detail in the wings.
  • Polyfill fluff
  • Fabric glue
  • Scissors
  • Heat erase pens or a regular pen
  • Sand
  • Two sandwich sized ziploc bags

Step 2: Make your stencils. We made a stencil for the body of the flamingo, the bottom circle, the wings, the beak and one for the feet. This helps to make sure your pieces come out the way you want them to look and anything you need two of are the same size.

Step 3: Trace your pieces on your fabric and felt. We used our handy dandy heat erase pens ( purchased off Amazon ) but you could use a regular pen ( just make sure any pen marks are on the back). We used orange felt for the beak and feet and two different shades of pink for the wings.

Step 4: Cut out your pieces. If you want to add any detail ( such as the embroidery thread on the wings) this is where you want to do this.

Step 5: Sew the body of your flamingo. Make sure you leave an opening on the bottom so you can stuff if with your sand and fluff.

Step 6: Stuff your flamingo. We used fluff for the head, neck and body. Fill it just enough so there’s still room for sand.

Step 7: Fill a sandwich sized ziploc bag with your sand. It doesn’t have to be filled all the way (this is just to add some weight to your doorstop). We double bagged ours to keep the sand secure (we learned the hard way last time that a second bag is necessary).

Step 8: Put the sand in your flamingo. We added a little fluff to the bottom to cushion it after the sand.

Step 9: Add your bottom fabric circle to the bottom of your doorstop. Use a needle and thread to sew around the circle. We used pins to attach the circle first to make sewing easier.

Step 10: Now it’s time to construct the legs of your flamingo. Use a ruler to draw a rectangle on your black fabric ( or whatever color your using) 6” x 2.5” in size. You will need two of these pieces. Then cut them out and fold them in half hot dog style so you can pin them. You will be making two tubes to stuff with your pollyfill.

Step 11: Sew your legs. You can use a sewing machine if you’d like but we just used a needle and thread. You won’t see your stitching so it doesn’t need to be perfect.

Step 12: Turn your legs right side out. You will need to put your patient pants on for this. We used a pencil to help with this. You can use it to help guide the fabric through your tiny tubes.

Step 13: We hope you didn’t put your patient pants away yet. Stuff your legs with your pollyfill. We used our same pencil to help the fluff go all the way through to the end of the tube. Leave one end a little unstuffed so the flamingo can sit flat on top of it.

Step 14. Sew both ends of your legs closed. The stitches don’t have to be perfect. They won’t be seen.

Step 15: Get to glueing! This is where your flamingo starts to look like a flamingo. Now you need to glue the legs to the bottom of your doorstop ( make sure the seams are towards the bottom). We used fabric glue for this. Now you can glue the adorable feet to the end of legs. Now you can add any other details like the wings, the beak and little felt eyes.

Not only is this doorstop absolutley adorable it’s also super functional! You could really do any creature you love. How cute would a turtle be or a bear or even a sloth. That’s the beauty of making things yourself, it’s completley customizable!
