Sometimes embroidering directly onto something is well… difficult. We’ve experienced this many times over our embroidery journey. So, when we found out you could just embroider onto a separate piece of fabric and then adhere it onto something else we were pumped! Of course it’s not necessary for all our embroidery projects but for a beanie we thought it would be a whole lot easier.

Gather your supplies:

  • Your beanie
  • Your embroidery fabric ( we just used some white duck canvas we had left over from a previous craft project)
  • Embroidery floss
  • Embroidery needle
  • Scissors
  • An embroidery hoop that fits your fabric
  • Fabric glue (We have recently switched to this glue and we will never go back)
  • Heat erase pen ( you could use a regular pen but we find that a pen that erases really comes in handy when your crafting)

Step 2: Cut your fabric to size. Just make sure its a little larger than your embroidery hoop and it’s the right size to fit on your beanie. It could really be any size that you want.

Step 3: Draw out your design. We were making this for a nightmare before Christmas lover. So, obviously we went with a classic image from the movie.

Step 4: Embroider your design. This is where things start to get fun!

Step 5: Remove your fabric from your hoop and give it a quick press with an iron. This will also erase any visible pen left behind.

Step 6: Carefully cut out your shape from your embroidered fabric. Make sure you leave a small border all the way around so you can sew around it for extra stability.

Step 7: Adhere your image to your beanie. We used fabric glue for this.

Step 8: We used some black embroidery floss to create a border around the image. This acts as extra stability and as nice way to finish the image.

That’s it! This technique really opens up the possibilities for embroidery. It’s a fantastic way to add your embroidery designs to just about anything. Happy crafting!
